In this video you will see me combine various techniques to ease shoulder pain, blending shiatsu and massage technique to ease pain.
My client Natalie has been coming to me for a number of years when she was first training for triathlons and started to suffer with groin strain and sciatic like symptoms. After helping her deal with this she trusted me enough to help with other injuries and imbalances and recommended me to most of her family and friends. I have worked with her mum, stepdad (a former GB athlete) and now her partner who is a local rugby union star.
I have worked with Natalie throughout her two pregnancies to help ease pain in her lower back and hips. This time she came to me with shoulder pain which she described as “a knot behind her shoulder” and a feeling of a hot poker between her shoulders.
Now this is something I see a lot and have a high success rate of treating.
Why do we see so much shoulder pain?
It all comes down to body mechanics. We as humans are designed to move but we don’t go through the whole range of movements enough, in fact we spend most of our time in a forward, rounded shoulder position. Think how much time we spend sat at a desk on computers, on our phones , driving and heads in a downward position looking at screens. A lot of woman will carry more weight up front and tend to round their shoulders to mask this. Men who train will more often than not concentrate on ‘chest day’ and will not stretch after a workout.
All these activities shorten the muscles in the chest , front delts and SCM in the neck which results in the neck pulling the head forwards. Leaving this unchecked will give you the ‘Gorilla’ look and will lead to pain. The body acts like a pully system so, as the muscles at the front tighten and shorten the muscles in the back lengthen. As the muscles in the back stretch and lengthen over time, most commonly, the Rhomboids and Levator scapulae there comes a tipping point where the muscle can stretch no more. The body locks the muscle down in order to prevent it tearing . It is at this point you feel pain and it may present in or around the shoulder.
In order to deal with these locked, stretched muscles we must first deal with the short muscles. This is why I will commonly start with the neck then chest before even looking at the back. I like to blend various techniques from both my shiatsu and sports massage training including:
Soft tissue work
Joint mobilisation stretching
Deep tissue massage
Pin and stretch techniques
Muscle energy techniques
Rehab is as important as the actual session if not more important. This can be as simple as stretching and shoulder mobilising exercises which i can advise on.
