How I Became a ASMR Youtuber with 150k Subscribers

150 thousand subscribers! Imagine that like an entire town following me! But How did that even happen?

So it was around the start of 2019 and I was watching a technique video by Eric Dalton probably one of the worlds most famous massage therapists when a video popped up saying watch next… I clicked out of curiosity as it had been watched over 50 million times! Now what struck me was that it wasn’t a educational video like the massage videos I tend to watch but was done in silence… I asked my son why do you think people are watching this?

He simply Shrugged “satisfying Like chopping up soap or playing with Goo” what followed can only be described as falling down a rabbit hole we spent hours looking at various videos and I kept seeing the same thing pop up ASMR, ASMR, ASMR, ASMR so I googled ASMR and suddenly a penny dropped I’ve been experiencing ASMR all my life but never knew what it meant…

For those that don’t know what ASMR is here is the description from Wikipedia

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), sometimes auto sensory meridian response,[2][3][4] is a tingling sensation that usually begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia,[5] it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia[6][7] and may overlap with frisson.[8]

ASMR signifies the subjective experience of “low-grade euphoria” characterized by “a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin.” It is most commonly triggered by specific auditory or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control

I then said type in ASMR Massage and all these channels started popping up, two in particular caught my attention ASMR Barber and ASMR Massage, the first seemed to travel the world getting massage while wearing his little blue trunks and the other well he did a massage and whispered what he was doing, I read the comments people are watching this to go to sleep!…. Now at the time id been filming massages to create little videos to advertise what I do on Instagram…

My son looked at me “Dad your already making videos just make some longer ones” And that was it something about it appealed to my creative side I’ve always loved making media projects and studied media at college. I said to myself right I’ll try make 1 or 2 videos a week and see if we can hit 1000 subscribers in a year and if that happens we’ll give it 2 years and just see what happens.

It took me just 3 months to hit 1k subs and in less than a year I had 25k following me, It felt amazing to gain these followers I cant deny I buzzed off it and it propelled me to keep producing to keep learning but what really gave me fire in my belly I started to get messages and comments telling me how my videos are helping people… Some simply that they help them relax or sleep…

But some people telling me how its helping with PTSD, dealing with sexual trauma one man even watching to keep calm during an operation. And since then One lady has watched me videos during child birth!

Now the road hasn’t always been easy, its been frustrating too I’ve had a lot to learn and made a lot of mistakes along the way. I’ve been hacked and lost my channel and twice I’ve been thrown out the partner program each time something like this has happened its been a major anxious struggle and battle to fix things and turn things around. I’ve lost my audience at times and lost my direction, I’ve burned out and several times nearly thrown in the towel but I keep going and I will keep going as long as people enjoy the content I make.

It took me 3 months to hit 1k subs and 3 years to hit 150k subs and at least 500 videos, I’d still argue I’m a working progress there’s still a lot I need to learn and improve on but hopefully on the road to 1 million subscribers I’ll get there.

My Top 5 Tips for new youtubers

  1. Just begin don’t sit around waiting for it to happen to making videos today whether its on you phone!
  2. Don’t focus on the number first learn your trade! Spend the first 100 videos to learn how to film, edit, create titles and aim to get a little better with each video
  3. Be consistent don’t make 10 videos in a month then make none for 3 months, stick to a routine whether its 1 a week or 3 or even daily but make sure its achievable
  4.  If you begin to struggle and its effecting your mental health take a break a week or 2 last thing you want to do is burn out.
  5. Don’t ask your friends to watch! unless they are interested in the subject, it doesn’t benefit you to have views from people who are not interested in your niche, let the algorithm do its thing and find the correct audience for your material.

Will I get to 1 million Subscribers?

I’m not sure what the future of my channel will be, but I do plan on continuing while ever people are watching and its helping them but most importantly I’ll continue while ever I’m having fun because I love creating content. I’d Love to one day reach 1 million subscribers maybe I will be amazing if I could do that in the next 5 years.
